Child & Adolescent Therapy

Does your child have trouble dealing with their emotions? Is their behavior sometimes disruptive to your home life? Have they experienced sudden loss or trauma?

As they grow, children and adolescents develop social skills and emotional intelligence. This awareness helps them to develop into healthy, happy, and successful individuals. But some children have trouble processing their emotions and this often leads to behavior that negatively impacts their school life, home life, and overall well being.

Attachment is a crucial aspect of child therapy, focusing on the emotional bond between a child and their primary caregiver.

At Parent Child Therapy Clinic, we focus our treatments based in attachment theory. Our therapists work to strengthen secure attachments, address disruptions, and provide a safe space for children to explore and express emotions.

Effective Forms of Therapy for Children

Therapy offers children and adolescents a safe space to work through their thoughts and emotions. With the help of a specialized therapist, children can resolve problems, modify behaviors, and make positive and lasting changes.

The following are a few different types of psychotherapy available to our children and families. Each offers unique approaches and techniques to bring about positive outcomes. Sometimes a therapist may choose to use just one specific treatment, and other times they may find a combination of various treatments is the best approach.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy

Our practice specializes in Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), an award-winning, gold standard treatment for children ages 2-8 with impairing disruptive, self-regulation behaviors that interfere with family, peer and student-teacher relationships. These children carry a variety of externalizing diagnoses, e.g., oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and ADHD. PCIT has been adapted as well for children with primary anxiety disorders, trauma, and Autism. We offer PCIT in both English and Spanish.

PCIT (Parent-Child Interaction Therapy) is a specialized therapy for children aged 2 to 8 with behavioral issues. It involves play-based sessions where the therapist coaches parents in positive interactions with their child. The therapy aims to strengthen the parent-child bond, improve communication, and reduce behavior problems.

NEW OFFERING: PCIT FOR OLDER CHILDREN (AGES 7-10). Also offered in English and Spanish.

Play Therapy

Here at PCTC, we harness the transformative power of play therapy for children. Through engaging play sessions, we provide a safe space for children to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Our trained play therapists offer a variety of materials and techniques, allowing children to externalize theirstruggles and find creative solutions. Our interventions foster self-awareness, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and resilience, supporting children's overall well-being. Join us on this transformative journey of healing and growth through play therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT helps children and adolescents to identify harmful thought patterns. Once a child recognizes that their thoughts create their feelings and moods, they can learn to control themselves and their behavior. Research has shown that CBT is highly effective at treating depression and anxiety as well as helping children, deal with traumatic experiences.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma and their parents or caregivers. Research shows that TF-CBT successfully resolves a broad array of emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with single, multiple and complex trauma experiences.

Sand Tray Therapy

Sand tray therapy is a therapeutic approach designed specifically for children. It involves using a sandbox or tray filled with sand and miniature objects. Children can express their emotions and inner experiences through creating scenes and arrangements with the sand and objects. It provides a safe and nonverbal way for children to explore and process their feelings, promoting self-expression and healing.

Somatic Therapy for Children

At PCTC, we explore the transformative power of somatic therapy for children. This innovative approach recognizes the mind-body connection in healing and emotional well-being. Our skilled somatic therapists utilize techniques like breathwork and movement to help children process emotions and release tension. Through somatic therapy, children develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience.
